Role overview
This position is for an advanced research trainee who has earned a doctoral degree, or the international equivalent, and is continuing specialized study beyond the doctorate in preparation for an independent career in biomedical research. Working alongside and under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, the fellow contributes to the lab’s scientific progress while building professional independence.
Primary responsibilities
- Follow all institutional rules and procedures related to health and safety, equal opportunity, and the handling and storage of data.
- Participate actively in research projects under PI supervision while progressively strengthening independent research capability.
- Receive training and carry out work that supports the team’s investigations, including defining research questions, planning experiments, running studies, and interpreting findings.
- Draft and submit scientific manuscripts with direction from the PI.
- Build expertise in the desired area of lab work, informatics, physics, or clinical research, and become proficient with relevant tools and equipment.
- Contribute new ideas that enhance ongoing studies and add fresh knowledge to the research program.
- Develop teaching ability and, where appropriate, supervise students and their project work.
- Join collaborative discussions with other research teams and take part in, and sometimes lead, scientific seminars.
- Learn to recognize performance gaps and take steps to improve them.
- Toward the end of the fellowship, work with the PI to pursue or secure independent funding.
Required qualifications
The role requires a doctoral degree or M.D., along with up to 1 year of postdoctoral research experience in an academic or industrial laboratory, university teaching assistantship, residency, and/or clinical responsibilities beyond the qualifying doctoral degree.

Physical requirements
This is a light-duty role involving up to 20 pounds of force at times. While some work is desk-based, the person in the role should also expect to stand for periods and move around the hospital campus.
Compensation
The annual base salary range for this role is USD 60,000 to USD 75,564. Final pay may vary based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, job duties, and work location, as permitted by law.
