About The Team
The research division designs the model and decision-making framework that drives Decagon’s enterprise conversational agents. This team explores and integrates cutting-edge approaches in model training, prompting, orchestration, and evaluation to enhance agent accuracy, robustness, and efficiency in real deployments. Their mission is to advance applied conversational AI capable of understanding complex intents, managing extended dialogue context, and executing actions reliably, resulting in elevated resolution rates and user satisfaction at scale.
Role Overview
The Research Engineer will develop top-tier conversational AI models powering Decagon's agents, overseeing projects from conception through production deployment. Responsibilities include advancing the agent's reliability, capabilities, and efficiency, and innovating in training, evaluation, and system orchestration methodologies.
This role requires engineers who take full ownership of their work, deliver tangible improvements, and make impactful technical decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead research and engineering to enhance core conversational AI features such as instruction adherence, information retrieval, memory mechanisms, and completing complex tasks over extended interactions.
- Develop and refine end-to-end modeling pipelines to balance quality, performance, and user experience effectively.
- Collaborate with platform and product teams to deploy new models into production environments.
- Decompose complex research concepts into concrete, iterative development plans and objectives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years' experience in AI or machine learning engineering or research.
- Demonstrated experience in training and deploying large language models in production settings.
- Proficiency in Python and contemporary machine learning tools covering training workflows, evaluation protocols, and data pipeline construction.
- Proven track record of transforming research prototypes into dependable, impactful production systems.
Compensation
Annual salary ranges between $200,000 and $400,000, with equity options available. The exact offer depends on candidate experience, skill set, and responsibility scope, with flexibility for exceptional contributors. Compensation may vary based on U.S. location.
