About the role

YWCA Toronto is looking for a Relief Childcare Worker to support the delivery of its Child Care Program. This position is temporary, on-site, and based at the Bergamot Early Learning Centre in Toronto.

The centre is part of YWCA Bergamot, a 68-unit apartment building in North Etobicoke that provides permanent, affordable, supportive housing for single women, gender-diverse people, and women-led or gender-diverse people-led families. The Early Learning Centre is a licensed space for 62 children from birth to 4 years old and is intended to support early childhood development in a centre of excellence setting.

What you'll do

  • Follow developmentally appropriate daily routines for children in line with the program’s philosophy.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to deliver an integrated program that supports children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth.
  • Adapt programming to match children’s interests, special needs, strengths, and learning pace.
  • Support children in group settings while remaining attentive to each child’s individual needs.
  • Apply health and safety requirements in accordance with funder and YWCA Toronto policies and procedures.
  • Carry out child abuse reporting obligations in line with the Child and Family Services Act and YWCA Toronto procedures.
  • Maintain daily logs and complete weekly statistical records as required.

Qualifications and experience

  • An Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate or equivalent credential is required; high school completion is also required, and equivalency cases may be considered.
  • An Early Childhood Education diploma is considered an advantage.
  • At least 1 to 3 years of experience working with children aged 0 to 4 is required.
  • Experience supporting children with special needs is an asset.
  • Background working with diverse families and children is preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development theory and practice is expected.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is important.
  • Applicants should be personable, dependable, flexible, adaptable, caring, passionate, and supportive.
  • Computer skills would be helpful.
  • Standard First Aid and Infant Child CPR (Level C) are required.
  • Knowledge of a second language is an advantage.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours within the Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm window is required.

Additional requirements

The successful candidate must complete a vulnerable sector police reference check before hiring.

YWCA Toronto is a unionized workplace represented by CUPE Local 2189, but this role is outside the bargaining unit. Internal applicants should note this position is not secondable.
