Job description
Role Overview
The organization is hiring a Registered Nurse for the operating room. This position focuses on delivering safe, effective patient care throughout the full surgical journey, including the stages before surgery, during the procedure, and after surgery, using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, and evaluation.
Reporting Line
This role reports to the Supervisor of Clinical Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
- Evaluate both physical and psychosocial patient status, including pain assessment and patient history collection.
- Share relevant updates with the right team members to maintain continuity of care.
- Record patient information clearly in the medical record and sign using the correct professional designation.
- Assess patient understanding, expectations, and likely outcomes, then develop nursing diagnoses and care plans accordingly.
- Set shared goals with patients and families and carry out individualized care plans.
- Respond appropriately in urgent and emergency situations.
- Work within professional, ethical, legal, and policy-based nursing standards.
- Show accountability in practice, including flexibility and sound clinical judgment.
- Adjust care plans as patient and family needs change.
- Follow proper preoperative communication and handoff procedures.
- Complete surgical case counting and related documentation accurately.
- Use correct aseptic technique and help maintain efficient operating room turnover.
- Follow approved procedures for obtaining blood products.
- Verify patient identity and surgical site details according to policy.
- Support the surgical team by anticipating the surgeon’s needs during procedures.
- Take part in a professional nursing organization.
Education and Experience
The role requires a graduate from an accredited school of nursing, along with a current Registered Nurse license. Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certifications are also required.
Working Conditions
The position is primarily indoors. Physical work includes prolonged standing and walking, occasional sitting, lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying up to 25 lbs, pushing loads up to 400 lbs with assistance, and other movements such as climbing stairs, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching overhead, and pulling as needed while caring for patients. Visual and hearing ability must be sufficient for patient care.
Environmental exposure may occasionally include fumes, dust, odors, mist, radiation, biomedical equipment, sharps, latex, disinfectants, communicable diseases, and electrical equipment. Protective gear such as gowns, gloves, masks, and head covers is provided.
