Job Overview

Join an exceptional team at Neill Public Library within the City of Pullman, offering a supportive community-focused and inclusive workplace. This casual, year-round position requires 8-16 hours per week with flexibility for evening and weekend shifts. Applicants must submit a resume.

Role Responsibilities

The Reference Assistant will perform various public service tasks, including managing the service desk, organizing and shelving library materials, and providing general assistance to patrons. The position operates under the supervision of the Circulation & Reference Supervisor and does not include supervisory duties.

  • Open and close the library as needed.
  • Handle check-in and check-out of materials using computer systems.
  • Manage fine payments and cash transactions.
  • Assist patrons with information on online resources and direct them within the library.
  • Answer phones and register new library patrons.
  • Provide general reference help in person, via phone, and email for diverse inquiries.
  • Collect patron feedback and forward it appropriately.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Sort and shelve books and other materials accurately.
  • Maintain cleanliness and stock of circulation and public areas.
  • Support other library departments based on operational needs.

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Effective communication with a diverse population, strong verbal and written English skills.
  • Polite, tactful, and diplomatic interactions with the public.
  • Proficiency with various computer software and equipment.
  • Ability to multitask efficiently and maintain accuracy in a busy setting.
  • Follow supervisor guidelines and policies consistently.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of numerical, alphabetical, and library classification systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Physically capable of performing job duties such as shelving and lifting materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of prior experience in a library or public/customer service environment.
  • Ability to assist both children and adults.
  • Familiarity with library and office computer applications, internet, and online information sources.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Preference given to candidates with prior experience using library computer systems.

Work Environment

The role primarily takes place within the library, involving desk and computer work as well as standing for extended periods when shelving. Physical effort includes arranging and shelving materials, as well as lifting supplies. Good vision and observational skills are crucial for sorting and shelving books and managing electronic patron records.
