Job description
About the Organization
The International National Trust Organisations (INTO) unites the global National Trust network to share knowledge and tools dedicated to conserving cultural and natural heritage. This collaboration fosters international cooperation throughout the heritage conservation sector.
Role Overview
We seek an experienced project manager with proven organizational skills and problem-solving capabilities to oversee a major initiative. This role includes responsibility for budget management, project scheduling, regular reporting, and coordinating project board meetings. The focus is on managing the Salt and Stone project, supported by a $400,000 grant from the ALIPH foundation. The candidate will guide and influence both internal teams and external partners to achieve project goals.
Work Environment and Location
INTO operates as part of the National Trust, with the team gathering regularly at the National Trust headquarters "Heelis" in Swindon. Occasionally meetings occur in London. Applicants from anywhere in the UK are welcome, but weekly attendance at the Swindon office is expected. The role follows a hybrid working model, requiring 40-60% of time spent at National Trust locations. Some international travel to East Africa will be necessary.
Project Description
The project aims to preserve Swahili coastal heritage in Zanzibar and the Comoros by restoring two historic buildings endangered by climate change effects such as sea-level rise, salt corrosion, humidity, and harsh weather. Restoration targets include the Ba’mnara Mosque in Zanzibar and the Swaniani Princely House in Comoros. The project blends conservation work with climate adaptation planning, skill development, community involvement, and regional knowledge sharing. It seeks to enhance local conservation capabilities, promote heritage-based economic sustainability, and boost coastal heritage resilience alongside the local communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the project remains on schedule and fulfills donor commitments.
- Maximize project impact by extending outreach and effectiveness.
- Represent INTO and the Salt and Stone initiative publicly, including at conferences and forums.
- Lead operational teams and collaborate with various stakeholders to guarantee success.
- Organize and lead project board meetings; manage budgets and reports.
- Support and influence partners across multiple locations and organizations.
Candidate Profile
- Proven success in managing large-scale complex projects or programmes encompassing planning, resource allocation, procurement, team leadership, and matrix management.
- Possession of recognized project or programme management qualifications such as APM PMQ, Prince2, MSP, or evidence of active pursuit and continuing professional development.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and excellence in influencing senior leaders.
- Experience managing complex stakeholder relationships in external environments.
- Capacity for international travel with a valid passport.
- Fluency in French and Swahili and previous international work experience are advantageous due to project requirements.
Additional Information
Applicants who can begin promptly will be prioritized, given the two-year project is ongoing. Flexibility and creativity are important traits to thrive in this role. The employer emphasizes a commitment to diversity and inclusion, fostering a welcoming environment for all.
