Job description

Role overview

ICON is looking for a UX-focused product designer to take ownership of the experience for a key area of BuildOS, the platform used by architects, builders, and construction operators. You will drive the full UX process for tools that connect users with ICON's construction technology, moving from discovery research all the way through handoff to engineering. The position is based in Austin, Texas, and reports to the Director of Product.

What you will do

You will work closely with engineers, product leaders, and both internal and external customers to define what should be built and the reasoning behind it. The role combines research, workflow definition, interaction design, prototyping, testing, and detailed documentation for development.

Core responsibilities

  • Conduct recurring interviews with architects, engineers, and builders to understand their processes, pain points, and unmet needs.
  • Track assumptions, research gaps, and priority questions for your product area, then translate discoveries into actionable insights for the roadmap.
  • Map detailed workflows and unusual edge cases for complex construction and design tasks.
  • Design for different user types, including technical experts and first-time software users with varying levels of fluency.
  • Define data requirements, integration touchpoints, and error-handling states.
  • Create wireframes, interaction flows, and interactive prototypes using Figma or an equivalent design tool.
  • Produce designs that are practical, refined, and easy to understand.
  • Regularly prototype and test with target users, then refine the experience based on direct feedback.
  • Review designs with engineering to confirm technical viability before final handoff.
  • Prepare developer-ready specifications with annotated screens, acceptance criteria, and interaction details.
  • Stay at least two sprints ahead of engineering so implementation teams always have clearly defined work ready to start.
  • Partner daily with engineering, product leadership, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Explain design decisions to engineers, leaders, and customers in straightforward language.
  • Align your design efforts with company Objectives and Key Results so the product experience supports broader business goals.

Minimum qualifications

You should have at least 3 years of experience in UX design, product design, or a closely related role. A portfolio is required that demonstrates end-to-end product work, not only visual polish. You must be comfortable conducting user interviews, synthesizing qualitative research, and turning findings into design decisions. Strong working knowledge of Figma, or a comparable tool, is important for wireframing, prototyping, and design systems. Experience designing for workflows with real operational constraints is needed, along with the ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in ambiguity.

Preferred background

It will be helpful if you have worked in construction technology, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, or another hardware-adjacent environment. Familiarity with 3D visualization, CAD tools, or spatial interfaces is also valuable. Experience writing product specs or PRDs alongside design work, using Jobs-to-Be-Done or continuous discovery methods, and working with design systems or component-based patterns will be an advantage.
