Produce Clerk

Overview

Hy-Vee is seeking a Produce Clerk for its Coralville, Iowa location. This is a non-exempt, full-time store role in the Produce department. The position is built around delivering quick, courteous customer service, keeping the department clean and organized, handling food safely, and making sure produce looks fresh and appealing.

Work Schedule

Night and weekend shifts are required for this role.

About the Role

The Produce Clerk is expected to support a friendly, customer-first shopping experience while maintaining high standards for sanitation, product quality, and department readiness. The role involves direct customer interaction, product handling, replenishment, and routine store support tasks.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide fast, helpful, and considerate service to shoppers in every interaction.
• Greet customers warmly, both within the Produce area and elsewhere in the store.
• Make an effort to learn customer names and use them whenever possible.
• Guide customers to products, retrieve items that are hard to reach, help with loading or unloading heavy goods, and relay customer feedback or requests.
• Answer phone calls promptly and assist callers courteously and efficiently.
• Work closely with teammates to maintain customer satisfaction and a positive workplace.
• Follow proper sanitation practices and keep the work area tidy at all times.
• Check merchandise regularly for freshness and presentation.
• Maintain adequate stock levels and follow or build production lists as needed.
• Forecast daily product needs for the department.
• Receive product, store it correctly, and review invoices when necessary.
• Rotate and replenish food items to preserve freshness.
• Remove trash promptly and prepare, finish, and refill products as needed.
• Follow all department and company rules for hygiene and dress.
• Comply with company policies and store-specific guidelines.
• Arrive for scheduled shifts on time and ready to work.

Additional Duties

• Place orders for products and supplies when needed.
• Set prices on items as required.
• Deliver orders when necessary and assist in other store areas as assigned.
• Handle other related tasks and special projects as requested.

Qualifications

• Ability to follow detailed but uncomplicated written or spoken instructions.
• Comfort working with a limited number of concrete variables.
• Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, copying figures, counting, and recording.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
• Ability to write identifying information and request supplies verbally or in writing.
• Less than a high school education or equivalent experience is acceptable.
• Up to six months or less of related work experience.

Physical Requirements

This role requires medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly. It also requires good visual ability, including near and far vision, depth perception, color recognition, and field of vision. Tasks may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.

Working Conditions

The job often involves exposure to temperature changes and damp environments. There may also be risks related to moving equipment, electrical shock, and contact with cleaning chemicals and solvents. The work pace is fast.

Tools and Equipment

Common equipment used in this position includes knives, a wrapping machine, cash register, pallet jack, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, and calculator.
