Job description
Role Overview
This position calls for a process engineering professional with strong expertise in seawater desalination and conventional water treatment systems. The role is based in the Greater Chennai Area and involves end-to-end process design work for both pre-bid tendering and post-bid engineering phases.
Core Experience Profile
The ideal candidate should hold a Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Environmental Engineering and have prior experience in designing desalination plants. Experience gained in a water treatment company, with practical exposure to both desalination and conventional treatment plant design, is expected.
Process Design Scope - Sea Water Desalination Plant (SWDP)
The role includes complete process design for seawater desalination facilities, covering intake, pretreatment, ultra-filtration, reverse osmosis, remineralization, brine handling, sludge treatment, and related process systems.
- Design of seawater intake systems, including different intake configurations.
- Pretreatment design using dissolved air flotation, dual media filters, multi media filters, and ultrafiltration membranes.
- Reverse osmosis design for seawater and brackish water applications.
- Energy recovery system design using technologies such as energy recovery turbines, pressure exchangers, and work exchangers.
- Remineralization through limestone bed filtration with carbon dioxide dosing.
- Brine management involving interim storage, reuse within the process scheme, and discharge back to the sea.
- Sludge management covering separation, dewatering, and final disposal of process sludge.
- Metalloid removal, including boron removal using ion exchange technology.
Process Design Scope - Conventional Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
The selected candidate will also work on conventional and process water treatment systems, including clarification, filtration, disinfection, demineralization, electro-deionization, and condensate polishing units.
- Conventional WTP design with clarifier, filtration, and disinfection systems.
- Process plant WTP design with demineralization and electro-deionization.
- Design of condensate polishing units for both high-pressure and low-pressure systems.
- Selection of processes for managing cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins.
- Selection of treatment methods for color, odor, heavy metals, micropollutants, and similar contaminants.
Engineering Deliverables
The role requires the ability to produce design deliverables for both tender-stage engineering and detailed engineering after award.
- Process design calculations.
- Hydraulic calculations.
- Mechanical equipment lists.
- Civil unit lists.
- Electrical load lists.
- Instrument range inputs.
- Process flow diagrams.
- Mass balance diagrams.
- Hydraulic flow diagrams.
- Process and instrumentation diagrams.
- Plant layout drawings.
- General arrangement drawings.
- Hazardous area classification drawings.
- Chemical, power, and utility guarantees, including specific power consumption calculations.
- Preparation of RFQs.
- Vendor offer review, evaluation, and selection.
- Technical data sheets.
- Process design basis reports.
- Operation and control philosophy documents.
- Scenario analysis.
- Inputs for operation and maintenance philosophy.
- Inputs for financial modeling in BOOT/BOO projects, including correction factors and correction curves.
Standards and Tools
The candidate should be familiar with applicable codes, standards, and manuals used for desalination and water treatment projects in Middle Eastern, African, and South East Asian markets. Familiarity with relevant design tools for water treatment and desalination plant engineering is also required.
