Job description
Role overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton. This is a varied, active position that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The job combines desk-based duties with practical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
What the role involves
You will support day-to-day prison operations as part of a team. Typical work includes gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV.
Working pattern and travel
This role follows fixed shift start and finish times, so you must be able to arrive at work punctually for every shift. A driving licence and access to your own transport can be useful because some prisons are in rural locations with limited public transport, but this is not mandatory unless specifically stated. The vacancy is based at a rural site, so it is important to consider your travel options carefully. Shift work includes weekends and nights.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It offers a chance to contribute to public safety and to gain practical experience in how a prison operates.
Career development
This position provides training, development opportunities, and progression routes. It can also open doors to other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
