Job description
Role overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is hiring for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton. This is a hands-on, busy prison support position where you will help keep day-to-day operations safe and organised. The work is varied and can include security checks at the gate, searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV.
The role combines desk-based tasks with active duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles. It is a fast-moving environment where you will be part of a supportive team making an important contribution to the running of the prison.
Travel and attendance
Some prison sites are in remote areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work on time for each shift. Please consider the location carefully before applying.
About the role
You do not need formal qualifications for this position. It may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays composed when pressure builds, and works well in a team. Good judgement, common sense, and reliability are important for helping maintain a safe and efficient prison environment.
The job includes a range of shifts, such as weekends and nights, and offers a practical introduction to prison operations. While contact with prisoners is generally limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the site. The experience gained can create pathways into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and progression
You will receive training and development opportunities, with scope to build experience and progress within the prison service.

The stated salary for this role is £29,432.

- Access to a funded Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
