This is a hands-on delivery role where you’ll stay active, work independently, and represent a trusted postal service in the community.
Pay and working pattern
The position pays £13.68 per hour, with monthly pay and the option of paid overtime. The scheduled hours are 37 per week, arranged over 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday, with shifts typically between 07:00 and 15:00. You’ll be included in a rotating rota, which may change according to delivery demand, and Sunday working is required.
What the job involves
- Preparing letters and parcels at the delivery office before leaving for route work.
- Delivering mail and parcels on foot and by van within your assigned area.
- Serving as a regular point of contact for customers and building good local relationships.
- Working outside in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Handling a varied workload that can include exam results, birthday mail, business deliveries, and other important items.
Working conditions
This is a physically active, fast-moving role. You should expect long walks of up to 12 miles or 20,000+ steps a day, daily driving of a Royal Mail van, lifting and carrying mailbags of 10kg or more, and busy days with time pressure, especially during peak periods.
About you
Royal Mail will provide full training, a uniform, and a red delivery van. To succeed in the role, you need to be dependable, organised, resilient, comfortable working alone, and focused on delivering great customer service.
Requirements
- A full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points, registered in your current name and address.
- Confidence and willingness to drive a Royal Mail van every day, plus the ability to pass a driving assessment.
- Good physical fitness for long-distance walking, stairs, hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags weighing 10kg+.
- A reliable, self-driven approach to work.
- Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment.
- A customer-first attitude and pride in good service.
- Comfort with outdoor work and independent working.
Benefits
- 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with service, adjusted for part-time or fixed-term hours where relevant.
- Career growth and development opportunities.
- A strong pension package and 24/7 wellbeing support, including online GP access.
- Family-friendly policies.
- MyBundle+ discounts and offers across everyday purchases, days out, and more.
- Reduced-price RMG products and free stamps at Christmas.
Additional information
This role is expected to involve secure delivery of all items on the route, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with Royal Mail business standards. For candidate search purposes, roles offering between 35 and 37 hours per week may be displayed as full-time, but any contract under 37 hours is treated as part-time in the employment contract. The application process does not require a CV; candidates complete an online test and then attend an interview with the manager.
