Job description

Role overview

The Material Research team is looking for a Polymer Chemist to help create new polymers for the company’s next generation of non-PFAS membranes. The position centers on strengthening polymer synthesis know-how and building a stronger understanding of how polymerization, structure, and material properties influence membrane performance. It suits a researcher who combines scientific rigor with commercial awareness and enjoys working across polymer chemistry, materials science, process development, and application-focused performance.

This is a temporary assignment for 9 months based in Putzbrunn, Munich, with the option to work in a hybrid format.

What you will do

  • Carry out application-led research plans to improve the understanding of valuable polymers for internal stakeholders.
  • Create, synthesize, and analyze polymers at laboratory scale.
  • Build connections between polymerization conditions, polymer structure, material characteristics, and end performance.
  • Define purity requirements for monomers and solvents, and test whether polymerization recipes can be scaled up successfully.
  • Develop fresh ideas for choosing monomers and designing polymerization processes.
  • Record findings clearly and share them through technical documents and presentations.
  • Support the move from lab-scale polymerization concepts to scalable, business-ready polymer synthesis processes by working with external collaborators and development teams across EMEA and the US to exchange expertise and speed up progress.

Required qualifications

  • A PhD in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Strong practical background in polymer design, synthesis, and analytical characterization, including NMR, FTIR, Raman, GPC, DSC, and TGA.
  • Direct experience with polymer synthesis, ideally including step-growth polymerization and scale-up beyond bench level.
  • A solid grasp of how polymerization conditions, structure, and final properties affect each other.

Preferred background

  • Exposure to related areas such as surface science.
  • Knowledge of the rheology of polymer solutions.

What the employer offers

The organization offers a competitive and comprehensive rewards package designed to support daily life and long-term growth. Benefits are structured to provide flexibility and support overall well-being. Associates also participate in a stock ownership plan in each country, and may have access to profit-sharing opportunities.
