Job description

Role Overview

JoVE is looking for a seasoned Peer Review Editor to run the peer review workflow from manuscript submission through editorial verdict. In this position, you will coordinate reviewers, keep evaluations on schedule and high in quality, and help ensure that every manuscript aligns with JoVE’s standards for scientific rigor, ethics, and reporting. The role is focused on creating a smooth, efficient, and positive experience for both authors and reviewers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle the complete peer review cycle for assigned manuscripts, including identifying and inviting reviewers, tracking reviews, preparing decisions, and managing revisions.
  • Develop, evaluate, and maintain a strong reviewer network; map expertise coverage and cultivate relationships with top reviewers to support quick and fair assessments.
  • Track deadlines and workflow performance such as time to first decision, reviewer acceptance, and review turnaround, while actively removing bottlenecks.
  • Work closely with JoVE’s Editorial and Production teams to ensure a seamless journey for authors from submission to publication.
  • Drive workflow enhancements such as better templates, automation, and dashboarding to shorten cycle times and raise review quality.
  • Keep manuscript-system records accurate and up to date, including reviewer activity, decisions, correspondence, and any policy exceptions in tools such as Editorial Manager and Monday.com.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a closely related discipline; an advanced degree is an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years of experience in scholarly publishing with direct peer review involvement.
  • Practical understanding of peer review formats such as single-blind, double-blind, and open review, along with open-access publishing workflows and current trends in scholarly communication.
  • Comfort using manuscript tracking and workflow platforms; strong preference for Editorial Manager, plus familiarity with automation or AI-assisted efficiency tools.
  • Excellent written communication and editorial judgment, with the ability to turn complex reviewer feedback into clear, actionable decisions.
  • Highly organized with solid project management skills and the ability to perform well in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented setting.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Opportunity to contribute directly to the acceleration of scientific research and the improvement of science education.
  • Exposure to global teams and a workplace that values innovation and collaboration.
  • Clear opportunities for career growth through a strong promote-from-within culture.
