Role Summary
Joining the People Operations team, the Payroll & Benefits Administrator is responsible for full-cycle payroll management, focusing especially on complex California wage and hour laws, ensuring timely and accurate employee payments. This role involves benefits administration and offers opportunities to gain substantial payroll experience in a dynamic, employee-focused environment using the UKG platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute semi-monthly payroll processing using UKG Pro and workforce management tools, ensuring compliance with state wage laws.
- Perform thorough payroll audits to detect and fix discrepancies before payroll finalization.
- Address employee payroll questions and resolve issues promptly.
- Manage payroll-related items like taxes, garnishments, and system settings.
- Assist managers with payroll queries including timecard reviews, approvals, and resolving timekeeping problems.
- Oversee employee benefits enrollment, life event updates, terminations, and coordinate with carriers; act as primary contact for benefits inquiries.
- Maintain up-to-date employee payroll records including pay rates and deductions in UKG.
- Support year-end processes such as W-2 preparation, commission administration, and reconciliation.
- Administer 401(k) plan activities including reporting and compliance monitoring.
- Perform additional duties as needed based on business requirements.
Performance Milestones
- Within 30 days: Complete UKG onboarding and process a payroll cycle with supervision, ensuring accuracy across employee types.
- Within 60 days: Process payroll with minimal oversight, correctly apply California-specific payroll regulations, and proactively identify exceptions.
- Within 90 days: Independently manage full payroll processing and compliance across states without escalations.
- Within 1 year: Deliver accurate, compliant payroll on schedule; improve UKG processes; serve as a go-to resource for California payroll questions.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years experience in payroll processing, including complete payroll cycles.
- Familiar with UKG (UltiPro/UKG Pro), Kronos, or similar HR/payroll systems.
- Knowledge of California payroll laws regarding overtime, meal/rest break premiums, and final pay rules.
- Understand federal payroll regulations including FLSA, tax requirements, W-2 reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for audits and data reconciliation.
- Meticulous attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve payroll issues accurately.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Associate degree or higher in Accounting, Business, or related fields, or equivalent experience.
- Experience handling multi-state payroll is preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
The position offers a yearly salary ranging from $68,000 to $80,000.
