Job description

Role overview

Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara is seeking an experienced patrol boat skipper to manage guest transfers, excursions, boat readiness, and on-water safety. The role sits within a global hospitality group operating a large portfolio across multiple regions and focuses on delivering smooth, safe, and guest-friendly marine operations.

Transfers and boat operations

  • Review the next day’s transfer and excursion plan each evening, including guest count, names, and any special arrangements.
  • Prepare the vessel according to the trip plan and operational procedures, ensuring supplies such as cold towels, drinks, and seasickness bands are stocked for every journey.
  • During the rainy season, make sure raincoats and extra towels are available on board.
  • Follow the checklist thoroughly and complete all required pre-departure checks.
  • If you or a crew member miss a meal while on a trip, coordinate with the Launch Section Manager or coordinator so food is arranged either from the resort or from the destination, following the management-approved meal cost unless otherwise authorised.
  • Ensure the boat is clean, fully set up, and positioned at the guest jetty at least 30 minutes before departure, with the crew present and dressed according to resort grooming and uniform standards.
  • Keep guest comfort high while maintaining safety and meeting guest needs throughout the trip.

Boat maintenance and safety

  • Comply with maritime laws, rules, and regulations issued by the Ministry of Transport & Communication of the Republic of Maldives.
  • Keep the seaworthiness certificate on board and ensure its requirements are observed.
  • Carry your captain’s licence with you during all trips.
  • Clean the boat and equipment regularly, keep the vessel in working condition, and report maintenance concerns immediately, following up until they are resolved.
  • Coordinate boat and engine maintenance with the engineering team and keep the Launch Section Manager or coordinator informed until closure.
  • Maintain, and when necessary construct, anchor points and navigation lights.
  • Take all precautionary steps to prevent hazards, including checking for fuel leaks, confirming life jackets are available, and ensuring fire extinguishers are operational.
  • Assess weather conditions carefully and advise the Launch Section Manager or coordinator whether trips can safely proceed during bad weather.
  • Carry the boat mobile phone at all times while on duty, keep it charged before each trip, and ensure the onboard radio is functioning.
  • Prioritise guest and crew safety at all times while operating the boat.

Communication

  • Coordinate arrival and departure timings, guest issues, and trip-related requests between airport hosts and resort operators.
  • Keep the Launch Section Manager or coordinator updated on any boat or guest-related issues as needed.
  • Notify the Launch Section Manager or supervisor whenever onboard supplies such as beverages, seasick bands, seasick bags, or resort fact sheets/brochures need replenishment.
  • Respond to guest questions promptly and provide the information they request.
  • Resolve guest concerns within your authority and complete incident reports for any events that occur during trips.
  • Gather guest feedback during trips and share it with the department so follow-up action can be taken.
  • Escalate any crew disciplinary matters to the Launch Section Manager or coordinator.

Teamwork and development

  • Attend resort-assigned training sessions.
  • Stay motivated, show initiative, and continuously build your skills and knowledge to improve personal and guest-service performance.
  • Maintain strong team spirit by building effective relationships with colleagues across departments and supporting shared resort and departmental goals.
  • Keep a constructive attitude and take initiative to solve problems.

General expectations

  • Be familiar with and follow the Transport Department, Front Office, and resort standard operating procedures.
  • Share ideas that can improve resort processes and procedures.
  • Actively present resort services and facilities to guests and other stakeholders.
  • Stay informed about updates to other resort products and pass that information on to your team.
  • Maintain excellent grooming, hygiene, and uniform presentation at all times.
  • Follow all resort safety, environmental, health, sanitation, and hygiene rules and legislation.
  • Adhere to the Employee Handbook guidelines.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the department or the Resort General Manager.
