Job description
Role overview
Torbay Council is hiring several Home to School Transport Passenger Assistants to help children and parents/carers in Torbay. This is mainly a term-time position supporting school transport journeys across the Bay.
Working pattern
Typical availability is expected from about 7:15am/7:30am to 9:15am/9:30am and again from 2:15pm/2:30pm to 4:30pm/4:45pm, Monday to Friday. For these transport duties, you will generally be collected from home and returned home by the vehicle provided, which may be a bus or taxi.
The role also includes Independent Travel Training (ITT), helping children and young people build the confidence and skills to travel more independently. ITT may be scheduled at different points during the school day and, at times, during school holidays, so flexibility is important. When working on ITT, you will travel to the child’s home or an agreed meeting point rather than being collected by transport. A bus pass will be provided, and eligible travel costs such as petrol allowance will be reimbursed according to council policy.
Main purpose of the role
You will provide reassurance, practical support and a safe, reliable presence for children during transport. The role calls for sensitivity to individual needs and effective communication with parents/carers, the Home to School Transport Team, school staff and drivers to help routes run smoothly and safely.
Additional information
This is a rolling vacancy for Home to School Passenger Assistants. If shortlisted, an interview will be arranged as soon as possible. The closing date shown is 12 July 2026, though the advert may close earlier than expected.
The post requires an Enhanced Criminal Record Check, including spent and unspent convictions, adult cautions not filtered under legislation, and any relevant local police information.
An informal discussion about the role is available by contacting Sue Mills on 07717 517122 or susan.mills@torbay.gov.uk.
This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Skills and knowledge needed
You should be confident in supporting and caring for others, working both independently and as part of a team, and communicating clearly with children, parents/carers and colleagues. Strong customer care skills are also important. The role requires fluency and confidence in spoken English.
Essential knowledge includes an understanding of children with special educational needs and disabilities, safeguarding, and epilepsy awareness.
Experience and suitability
Previous experience of working with children is essential.
