Role overview

Hyde Park Day School is hiring a creative and collaborative part-time art educator for its Northfield campus. The role is focused on helping students explore visual arts as a way to build confidence, express themselves, and grow artistically. The schedule is approximately 15 to 18 hours per week across about 2 to 3 days.

This position suits an educator who enjoys working in a mission-centered school community and partnering with students, families, and staff to create meaningful art learning experiences.

What you will do

  • Design and teach engaging visual arts lessons that support creativity, self-expression, and skill development.
  • Create lesson plans, course outlines, and teaching materials that align with the school’s goals.
  • Build and maintain a positive, inclusive, and orderly classroom atmosphere.
  • Monitor student progress and share helpful feedback.
  • Communicate with parents about progress, achievements, and classroom involvement when needed.
  • Work with the Principal and other staff on planning and implementing the Fine Arts program.
  • Strengthen and support the school’s visual arts curriculum.
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers to incorporate art-based learning where appropriate.
  • Bring ideas and expertise that help expand arts programming across the school.
  • Make sure instruction reflects the school’s mission and values.
  • Keep art materials, supplies, and equipment organized.
  • Assist with buying supplies and managing inventory as needed.
  • Help maintain a safe, structured, and engaging learning space.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Education, Liberal Arts, or a closely related discipline.
  • Practical background in visual or fine arts.
  • Strong ability to connect positively with students, families, and coworkers.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary school team.
  • Willingness and ability to work on-site at the Northfield campus.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or Illinois Substitute Teaching License is preferred.
  • Previous experience teaching visual arts in a school environment is preferred.
  • Experience supporting students with varied learning needs is preferred.
