Job description
About the Coaching Team
The coaching group is committed to nurturing talent across every stage of the pathway, from the youngest academy players through to the senior squad. Its approach to development is rounded and progressive, with equal emphasis on technical ability, tactical understanding, psychological strength, and respect for the game.
Strong and transparent communication is central to the way the team works. Players and their families are kept informed with regular feedback on training progress and future development opportunities. This is an opportunity to help raise coaching standards and support an environment where players can improve, perform, and enjoy football.
The Opportunity
You will help shape the academy pathway by supporting the growth of individual players, small groups, and teams through personalised development plans. The role involves planning, delivering, and reviewing coaching sessions that align with the academy’s football philosophy and long-term development model, with particular attention on each player’s individual progress.
Working with the analysis team, you will use video review and performance information to strengthen development plans and provide meaningful feedback that supports technical, tactical, and psychological improvement. The position also includes assessing trialists, contributing to recruitment choices, keeping accurate player information on the Football Intelligence Platform, and helping maintain a positive, development-led setting that supports engagement, retention, and long-term progression.
What We Ask For
You will play an important role within the Foundation Phase, supporting player development and progression through close partnership with the Academy Manager, Head of Coaching, and Cell Lead. The role requires regular monitoring of player journeys, ongoing feedback, and input into long-term succession planning and talent development.
In addition, you will help foster a strong learning and performance environment where players can succeed on and off the pitch. You will take part in academy meetings to help improve coaching practice, work with senior management and multidisciplinary staff, identify opportunities for continuous improvement, maintain high standards, and support development processes that create clear pathways and consistent delivery of the academy philosophy.
Compliance
An Enhanced DBS arranged through Sunderland AFC is required for this position.
