Role Overview
Join the City’s Arenas team in a hands-on role focused on arena operations, building upkeep, and janitorial support. This position involves daily cleaning tasks, running refrigeration and ice-resurfacing equipment, carrying out minor repairs and small renovation or construction projects, and assisting individuals and groups using the facilities and park areas. You will also help train and guide part-time staff, complete other related duties, and take on assigned security responsibilities.
Key Duties
- Carry out daily janitorial and cleaning duties.
- Operate refrigeration, ice-making, resurfacing, and skate-sharpening equipment.
- Handle general maintenance, repairs, and small-scale construction or renovation work.
- Assist members of the public and a range of user groups in facilities and park spaces.
- Provide direction, instruction, and support to part-time staff.
- Perform assigned security-related tasks.
- Use light maintenance and construction tools and equipment as required.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate brings practical experience in ice-making and building maintenance, along with the physical ability to manage demanding lifting and maintenance tasks. You should be comfortable working independently, dealing with the public in a courteous manner, and delivering strong customer service.
Required or preferred qualifications include Grade 12 completion, preferably with technical training related to the work; a valid Refrigeration Safety Awareness certificate or higher recognized by Technical Safety BC; and preferably a valid Refrigeration Operator certificate recognized by Technical Safety BC. You must also hold a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean driving record, Occupational First Aid Level 1, and CPR certification. A clear Police Information Check is required and must be maintained.
Skills and Technical Abilities
You should have a solid understanding of the tools, materials, and methods used in refrigeration, ice-making, building maintenance, and janitorial work. Practical ability in minor plumbing, carpentry, and painting is needed, along with skill in using and caring for a variety of hand and maintenance tools. Experience with light construction and maintenance equipment is also important.
Work Schedule
This role requires a flexible schedule and may include evenings, weekends, graveyard shifts, and holidays depending on operational needs.
