Job description

Role overview

This is a permanent, full-time Park Ranger position based at Wenderholm Regional Park, with work spread across Auckland’s Northern Regional Parks. The role starts immediately and sits within a team of 21 rangers.

The position is focused on helping people enjoy the outdoors safely while also protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the regional park network. Work is hands-on and outdoors-based, and the roster rotates across 40 hours per week.

Working pattern and location

You will be expected to work on a variable roster, including weekends, public holidays, and on-call/standby duties. The reporting base is Wenderholm Regional Park. A house at Atiu Creek may be available to rent at a discounted rate for the successful candidate, offering a distinctive lifestyle option.

What you will do

  • Welcome and engage with park visitors to encourage responsible park use and positive behaviour.
  • Help coordinate conservation activities and build effective working relationships with volunteers and stakeholders.
  • Support the planning and delivery of work programmes, events, and park activities.
  • Contribute to both formal and informal environmental education initiatives.
  • Carry out maintenance and operational tasks to keep park assets in good condition.
  • Work closely with volunteers, iwi, and community groups to strengthen partnerships.
  • Oversee contractors and check their work to make sure standards are met.
  • Support historic site protection work and help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming park spaces.
  • Assist with upkeep of recreational assets such as walking tracks, mountain bike tracks, tools, and related infrastructure.
  • Carry out plant and pest control, including native planting and pest plant management.
