Job description

Role overview

QBE International is looking for a Paralegal to join its expanding Legal team in Leeds. This permanent, full-time position is a strong fit for someone who wants to grow a legal career in the insurance sector while gaining experience across a broad mix of legal matters.

The role provides extra in-house legal and administrative support to the International Legal team. You will take on work that does not require a qualified solicitor, helping the wider team operate more efficiently and effectively.

This position is based in Leeds and follows a hybrid working model, with flexibility available where possible. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK. Support for professional qualifications may be considered at the company’s discretion.

About the employer

QBE is an international insurer with more than 13,000 people across 26 countries. The business aims to create meaningful impact for customers through a human approach and is working toward becoming a more consistent and innovative risk partner.

Employees are expected to work with colleagues who are skilled, supportive, and collaborative, while contributing to a culture that values empathy and performance.

Key responsibilities

  • Review straightforward commercial agreements such as confidentiality agreements, supplier terms and conditions, engagement letters, and IT and supplier contracts.
  • Support lawyers across a varied portfolio that includes corporate, commercial, insurance, finance/treasury, people, marketing, and IT matters.
  • Help coordinate major legal projects and related actions, including assistance for the Claims team with CCJs.
  • Respond to routine legal and non-legal queries, such as checking the correct legal entity or confirming document signatories.
  • Carry out legal research and draft documents as needed.
  • Work with Legal Operations on intranet updates, online filing systems, and reporting tasks.
  • Use legal systems and technology effectively in day-to-day work.
  • Keep knowledge current by staying informed about legal and regulatory changes and taking part in relevant development activity.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of internal procedures within the International Legal Team.
  • Build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate has experience supporting legal, commercial, or operational work in a legal or professional services setting. They should bring strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with solid organisation and administration abilities that help them prioritise work well.

A practical approach to problem-solving is important, as is the confidence to work independently and make decisions within one’s remit while knowing when to escalate for advice. The role also requires good IT capability, familiarity with MS Office tools including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Copilot, and a genuine interest in legal technology.

You should be a proactive team player who works collaboratively and contributes positively to the wider function.

Benefits

  • 30 days of annual leave, with the option to purchase up to 2 extra days.
  • Flexible working options, including part-time, job share, and compressed hours arrangements.
  • Auto-enrolment into the QBE pension plan with employer contributions of 10% of basic salary.

Awards and recognition

  • Insurance Post British Insurance Awards 2025: winner of Commercial Lines Insurer of the Year, Reinsurer of the Year (QBE Re), ESG, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative of the Year, and Insurance Personality of the Year - Chris Wallace, Executive Director UK insurance.
  • AXCO Global Insurance Awards 2024: winner of Network Management of the Year.
  • Insurance Business UK 5-Star Cyber Awards 2024: QBE rated as a 5-Star Cyber Insurer.
