Job description

About the role

The New York City Police Department works with communities to uphold the law, support public safety, reduce fear, and maintain order across New York City. The department emphasizes crime prevention, quality-of-life enforcement, and strong community relationships.

Position summary

This Paralegal Aide II role supports the Early Intervention Program by helping identify personnel who may be at risk of performance issues or adverse outcomes. The position works with commanding officers, relevant stakeholders, and the Health and Wellness Section to help shape support plans and coordinate committee activity.

Key duties

  • Collects, arranges, tracks, and manages records, files, data, and other department information needed for inquiries related to Stop, Question, and Frisk, racial profiling complaints, adverse credibility findings, suppression rulings, declined-to-prosecute data, and the development of the Early Intervention System, including matters involving certain arrests, excessive force, and active disciplinary proceedings.
  • Supports the review of background material used to prepare departmental responses.
  • Conducts standard legal research, prepares written summaries, and drafts legal correspondence for review by senior staff.
  • Helps with case studies and projects focused on identifying patterns and trends that require deeper data analysis.

Working hours

The schedule is 9x5 or 10x6, with Saturdays and Sundays as regular days off.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must satisfy one of the listed pathways: a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; or an associate degree/60 semester credits plus two years of full-time satisfactory paralegal experience in the United States; or a high school diploma/equivalent plus four years of full-time satisfactory paralegal experience in the United States; or a comparable mix of education and experience. A paralegal certificate from an accredited U.S. program or an ABA-approved program may replace 12 months of experience. Undergraduate credit may also substitute, with 30 semester credits equaling 12 months of experience. All candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent.

Experience expectations

Qualifying experience must involve paralegal services within the American legal system. Work that is mainly legal secretarial in nature, or where paralegal duties are only incidental, does not qualify.

Level II requirement

To be placed and compensated at Assignment Level II, candidates must have either one additional year of relevant paralegal experience or a bachelor’s degree in addition to the base requirements.

Preferred profile

Strong verbal communication, interpersonal ability, research capability, and writing skills are preferred. Comfort using spreadsheets and department databases is also valued.

Eligibility and special considerations

Only candidates who are permanent in the Paralegal Aide title or reachable on exam list number 1140 or 4070 may be considered. The position is also open to qualified applicants with disabilities under the 55-a program; applicants should state in their cover letter that they wish to be considered under that program.

Additional requirements

In accordance with federal law, selected candidates must verify identity and authorization to work in the United States and complete the required employment eligibility verification form at hiring.

Residency requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. In certain cases, employees in eligible titles who have completed two continuous years of City service may live in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. Final applicability should be confirmed with the agency representative during the interview process.

Benefits

The City of New York provides a broad benefits package that includes health coverage for the employee and eligible spouse or domestic partner and children under 26, union dental and vision benefits, paid annual leave, sick leave, paid holidays, a pension plan, and optional savings and pre-tax programs such as Deferred Compensation, IRA, and a flexible spending account.

Equal opportunity

The City of New York is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce and a workplace free from discrimination and harassment based on legally protected characteristics.
