About the Role
Join WSP as an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer within our Energy division, working on pioneering power transmission infrastructure projects that support the UK and Ireland's Net Zero ambitions. This role involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team dedicated to designing over 300km of overhead line systems in the coming years.
Key Responsibilities
- Design overhead power line systems, including selecting appropriate structures, conductors, and insulators.
- Create detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and documentation using tools such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, and Microstation.
- Conduct site surveys and collect data to inform design decisions.
- Perform structural and electrical calculations to verify the integrity and performance of overhead lines.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, safety codes, and environmental requirements.
- Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and other stakeholders to ensure integration of design requirements.
- Review and approve design changes and provide technical assistance during construction phases.
- Conduct design assessments and quality checks to maintain accuracy and completeness.
- Keep current with the latest advancements in overhead line technology and design practices.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent technical discipline, preferably in electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering.
- Experience using PLS-CADD/TOWER software for overhead line design.
- Proven background in overhead line engineering for voltages up to 400kV.
- Experience with upgrading projects, particularly involving High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductors.
- Familiarity with galloping studies, electromagnetic fields (EMF) and field effects calculations, wake effects, and AC interference on gas pipelines is beneficial.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to project sites.
- Chartered engineer status is preferred or working towards achieving it.
