Role Overview

The Operations Engineer is tasked with ensuring the smooth functioning and upkeep of data center facilities. Responsibilities include adhering to QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental) standards, managing hard and soft services, handling vendor relationships, and demonstrating strong problem-solving capabilities in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Comply fully with Khazna’s safety, quality, and environmental policies to maintain a secure work environment for staff and visitors.
  • Consistently wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tailored to specific tasks and environments.
  • Maintain safe and healthy conditions within the data center at all times, enforcing relevant local and international health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments, immediately halting unsafe work practices via "Stop Works Notice" and notifying management.
  • Promptly report safety observations, near misses, and investigate incidents to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all facility machinery and equipment are regularly maintained and safe for operation.
  • Adhere to Khazna’s sustainability initiatives and comply with environmental regulations and resource monitoring.
  • Be accountable for upkeep of HVAC, electrical, plumbing systems, and building structure.
  • Supervise shift operations, escalating risks to senior engineers as needed and coordinating vendor maintenance activities under company compliance standards.
  • Manage approval workflow for specialist vendor work orders including briefing, monitoring, and reviewing work.
  • Support permit issuance for third-party vendor tasks ensuring compliance and safety.
  • Apply troubleshooting and maintenance procedures to minimize operational disruptions, supporting complex tasks as necessary.
  • Assist senior staff in incident response, including coordination with NOC/BMS operators for alarms and alerts.
  • Ensure data center infrastructure reliability through proactive management to minimize downtime and maintain peak performance.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate operational documentation including system performance, incidents, and change records.
  • Contribute to planned maintenance and preventative inspections for non-critical systems ensuring optimal functionality.
  • Assist in annual technical checks and collaborate with senior engineers on complex problem analyses and mitigation.
  • Perform and oversee routine repairs and maintenance under senior supervision, ensuring security protocols are upheld.
  • Coordinate equipment installation and maintenance with vendors and contractors adhering to established standards.
  • Support development and execution of operational run books, playbooks, drills, and business continuity procedures.
  • Lead incident detection, logging, crisis management, and resolution efforts during shifts with guidance from senior staff as required.
  • Participate in audits, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives focusing on system reliability and sustainability.
  • Collaborate internally and with design and construction teams for facility upgrade projects ensuring consistency and effectiveness.
  • Strictly follow corporate policies, processes, and operating procedures for consistent work delivery.
  • Assist in preparing reports that meet departmental and quality standards, ensuring detailed documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Higher National Diploma in Engineering (minimum 3 years), or an equivalent qualification.
  • Intermediate certifications in Operations & Maintenance management or related fields.
  • Preferred certifications include Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) or Certified Data Centre Specialist (CDCS).

Experience Requirements

  • Between 2 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated background in data center operations, management, or mission-critical facilities is preferred.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capability to lead teams and collaborate effectively.
  • Adaptability in managing shifting priorities and complex tasks.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on quality assurance.
  • Familiarity with critical infrastructure components such as UPS, generators, BMS, chillers, and Fire Life Safety Systems.
  • Experience with CAFM/CMMS software platforms.
  • Competence in coordinating and planning complex maintenance operations.
  • Awareness of applicable data center standards and regulations is advantageous.
