Non-Executive Board Director

About the Role

The Eastern Star Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting older Australians to live with dignity, independence, and choice, seeks a new Non-Executive Director. This is a unique board position requiring active involvement beyond traditional governance, including assessing grant applications, visiting supported groups, and collaborating with investment managers to uphold the Foundation’s core values during a significant transition in leadership.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and oversee grant applications and funding decisions.
• Engage directly with grantees through visits and communication.
• Collaborate with investment managers to monitor financial stewardship.
• Participate in board meetings, the Annual General Meeting, and Grantee Presentation events.

Candidate Profile

• Strong financial literacy with experience in investment oversight and philanthropy or grant-making.
• Demonstrated empathy towards older Australians, either through personal experience or professional engagement.
• Ability to offer constructive criticism respectfully, maintaining positive relationships.
• Open to innovative thinking while honoring the Foundation’s established legacy.
• Comfortable contributing in diverse groups including members without formal governance backgrounds.

Additional Information

This is a volunteer position requiring attendance at four to five board meetings annually, held mostly during daytime weekdays, with a mix of online and in-person sessions. Queensland residents are strongly preferred; candidates from Northern New South Wales may also be considered. While prior board experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory.
