Job description
About the organisation
The Treasury – Te Tai Ōhanga works to build a better long-term future for Aotearoa New Zealand. As the government’s principal economic and financial adviser, it supports decisions that aim to improve living standards now and for future generations. Its focus is on a prosperous economy and society that is both sustainable and inclusive.
The organisation’s people contribute to some of the country’s most connected and complex policy areas, such as child wellbeing, climate change, health, housing, and long-term public finance. Their work helps inform and support Ministers, Crown Chief Executives, and other government decision-makers.
About the team
The Ministerial Advisory Service sits within the Strategic and Executive Services Directorate at Treasury. The team handles Ministerial correspondence, Official Information Act 1982 requests, Written Parliamentary Questions, Ombudsman matters, and the creation and publication of proactive information releases.
About the role
As a Ministerial and Proactive Release Advisor, you will take ownership of Treasury’s proactive release process while also contributing to the management of Ministerial correspondence, OIA requests, and Parliamentary Questions. This is a blended role with time split evenly between Ministerial Advisory work and proactive release responsibilities.
Your work will involve preparing documents for public release, including redacting sensitive information and making sure material meets Government Web Standards. You will also publish documents on the Treasury website and work closely with internal teams, including Web and Publications, as well as with Ministers’ offices.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate and prepare material for proactive release, including carrying out redactions and checking compliance with web publishing standards.
- Upload and publish documents on the Treasury website.
- Support the handling of Ministerial correspondence, OIA requests, and Parliamentary Questions.
- Work in close partnership with Ministers’ offices and internal Treasury stakeholders.
- Balance advisory duties and proactive release work across the role.
About you
To be successful, you should enjoy working in a fast-moving environment and be motivated by work that makes a meaningful difference. Treasury values applicants from a broad mix of academic, cultural, and social backgrounds who reflect the communities it serves.
You will bring strong relationship-building ability, sound analytical thinking, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. You should be comfortable drafting clear, concise plain-English documents, checking your own work carefully, and managing competing priorities with strong project and time management skills.
High integrity, strong customer focus, and solid technical capability are also important. An understanding of the public sector, including Parliamentary processes and the Official Information Act, would be an advantage. The role is based in Wellington so you can work closely with Treasury stakeholders and Ministers’ offices.
Skills and experience required
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong research and analysis skills.
- Excellent plain-English writing and verbal communication.
- Careful attention to detail and quality assurance capability.
- Customer-focused approach with a commitment to high standards.
- Confidence using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
- Strong planning, coordination, and workflow management skills.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
- Working knowledge of public sector processes, Parliamentary protocol, and the Official Information Act is beneficial.
- Tertiary qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
What’s on offer
Treasury offers flexible working arrangements and five weeks of annual leave, along with health and wellbeing initiatives that support balance and wellbeing. You can also connect through social events, sports teams, and employee networks.
The workplace culture emphasises inclusion and diversity, supported by the wharenui at the centre of the office environment. The role also comes with development opportunities to help you train, grow, and advance your career.
