Role overview

This contract opportunity is for a remote Military Operations & IHL Expert supporting defense-related analysis and policy work. The engagement is expected to run for 10 to 40 hours per week, with compensation set between $50 and $90 per hour.

What you will do

  • Build detailed classification systems for military applications and defense operations across a variety of conflict environments.
  • Develop screening and triage methods that separate civilian use cases from military or dual-use technologies.
  • Define the limits of assistance that cannot be provided under international humanitarian law.
  • Create conflict-risk scoring models and scenario-based assessment tools for defense work.
  • Help refine benchmark criteria used to test AI models in both defense and humanitarian settings.
  • Prepare clear written and spoken analysis covering warfighting, targeting, and IHL concepts in depth.

What we are looking for

  • Substantial experience in military work, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law; senior contributors are expected to bring around 8 years of relevant background.
  • An advanced degree, or an equivalent level of hands-on operational experience, in military science, security studies, international law, or a similar discipline.
  • A strong reputation and proven record in areas such as warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or applying humanitarian law.
  • Deep understanding of conflict ethics, IHL, and defense policy frameworks, with the ability to apply them to real-world situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially for explaining technical and ethical ideas in a clear way.
  • Prior experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory roles within military, government, legal, or think-tank settings.
