Job description

About the Role

Dallas Medical Center, part of Prime Healthcare, is seeking a Microbiology Specialist I to join a team focused on quality, compassion, and serving the community. The hospital is a 155-bed acute care facility accredited by The Joint Commission and provides services such as around-the-clock emergency care, cardiology, wound care, surgical procedures, cardiac catheterization, and outpatient therapy. It is the only trauma center nearby, a Certified Chest Pain Center, and has earned multiple Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Awards along with eight Healthgrades Five-Star ratings over the last three years.

What You Will Do

  • Carry out waived, moderate, and high-complexity tests permitted under CLIA, Bus. & Prof. Code Section 1204, using the level of skill aligned with your education, training, and experience.
  • Follow established lab processes for collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting patient specimens and results.
  • Apply quality control procedures and document corrective actions whenever test systems fall outside performance standards.
  • Spot issues that could affect testing quality and either resolve them or escalate them immediately to the supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform a broad range of microbiology tests that require independent judgment, using both manual and automated methods.
  • Support testing in other department areas when licensed and competency has been demonstrated.
  • Complete maintenance tasks on instruments and equipment on a daily, weekly, monthly, or as-needed basis.
  • Check patient result accuracy before releasing or reporting findings.
  • Recognize expected result differences across age groups, from newborns through geriatric patients.
  • Handle proficiency testing samples the same way as patient samples and avoid any collaboration with other laboratories before results are submitted to the proper agencies.
  • May be asked to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture for patients across all age groups, including newborns and older adults.
  • Help develop and maintain laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Follow all department and hospital requirements related to safety, infection prevention, emergency readiness, and human resources.
  • When needed, serve as the Micro department in-charge during the shift if the supervisor is unavailable.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned by the department manager or director.

Education and Experience

You should hold a current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, or a limited state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license as a Microbiologist Specialist where required by the state.

A CLS/MT generalist with 1 year of microbiology experience is preferred, and prior experience as a Microbiologist Specialist is also preferred.

A bachelor's degree in chemical science, physical science, biological science, Medical Laboratory Technology, or another CLIA-recognized educational path under 42 CFR 493.1489 is required.
