Role overview
The Government of Manitoba is hiring a Medical Technologist 2 for a regular, full-time position based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, within the Department of Agriculture, Animal Health and Welfare / VDS, Industry Advancement. The role supports the Veterinary Diagnostic Services Laboratory and focuses on virology testing.
Pay and position details
Salary for this MG2 role ranges from 87550 to 110002 per year. Advertisement number: 45217. Closing date: June 25, 2026. This recruitment will create an eligibility list for current and future regular and term Medical Technologist roles, subject to staffing approval, and the list will stay active for 12 months.

Main duties
Reporting to the Virology Supervisor, the Medical Technologist will conduct routine and specialized virology tests on animal specimens with limited oversight. The work includes molecular and serological laboratory procedures and requires the ability to quickly learn advanced diagnostic techniques.
Responsibilities
- Carry out routine and specialized virology testing on animal samples.
- Perform molecular biology procedures such as PCR.
- Run serological methods such as ELISA and fluorescent antibody testing.
- Work from animal specimens in a diagnostic laboratory environment.
- Learn and apply advanced laboratory techniques as needed.
- Coordinate multiple tests while managing tight timelines and competing priorities.
- Record results accurately and maintain attention to detail.
- Follow laboratory health and safety standards.
- Collaborate effectively with laboratory team members and communicate clearly.
Requirements
- Experience from academic or work settings analyzing samples in a diagnostic laboratory.
- Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR and/or serological methods such as ELISA.
- Solid understanding of molecular biology techniques.
- Ability to manage several tests under pressure and meet conflicting deadlines.
- Careful data entry and strong accuracy in laboratory work.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and a cooperative team approach.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist, currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM), or eligible for registration before starting.
- Ability to provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Ability to comply with the organization’s rabies vaccination policy.
Preferred qualification
A post-secondary degree in biological sciences, with specialization in microbiology and/or molecular biology, is preferred.
