Job description
Role and location
Kelowna, British Columbia, is a major Okanagan hub known for lakeside recreation, wineries, orchards, parks, hiking, biking, golf, and winter sports. The city combines natural scenery with modern amenities, including restaurants, shopping, galleries, live entertainment, and theatres.
Interior Health is looking for a medical microbiologist to join its regional team in September 2027. The role is based at Kelowna General Hospital and supports a broad regional laboratory network.
About the facility
Kelowna General Hospital is one of BC’s leading healthcare centres and one of Interior Health’s two tertiary hospitals. It provides a wide range of services, has about 400 beds, and handles more than 84,000 emergency department visits each year. The hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, which includes BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside Victoria and the Lower Mainland, along with the region’s main surgical site. It also features a modern maternity unit, neonatal intensive care services, expanded emergency and ambulatory care spaces, new inpatient units, operating rooms, a rooftop helipad, pediatric services, psychiatry units, and advanced laboratory and clinical departments. The hospital is also a teaching site for the Southern Medical Program and is affiliated with the University of British Columbia.
What the role involves
You will support consultation services for four microbiology laboratories located in Kelowna, Kamloops, Trail, and Cranbrook, and work closely with a large regional network of infection control practitioners.
The position includes oversight of regional laboratory services across bacteriology, mycology, and molecular testing. You will also contribute to clinical consultation and oversight of the regional Infection Prevention and Control program, and participate in a clinically focused on-call rotation shared with six other microbiologists.
Terms and compensation
This is a clinical service contract role. Pay is tied to a provincially negotiated salary grid and is structured as follows: 90% of $380,812–$423,125 in year 1, 95% in year 2, and 100% from year 3 onward.
Relocation support and other notes
Relocation funding is available, subject to eligible receipts and maximum limits: $9,000 for moves within British Columbia, $12,000 for moves elsewhere in Canada, and $15,000 for relocation from outside Canada.
Incentive amounts may change, and the final details will be confirmed when an offer is made.
Ideal background
The preferred candidate will have experience in bacteriology, mycology, molecular testing, and infection prevention and control. Strong people skills are important for working effectively with administrative, hospital, infection control, and laboratory teams across the region.
