Job description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Charge Technologist or designate, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) supports the laboratory by managing the triage, accession, and processing of clinical specimens. The role involves performing basic routine laboratory procedures according to set protocols, including phlebotomy in compliance with departmental policies. The MLA ensures adherence to safety standards, quality assurance programs, and accreditation requirements within the framework of Shared Health's mission and relevant legislation.

Location and Schedule

This position is based at Shared Health's Johnson Memorial Hospital Laboratory in Gimli, Manitoba. It is a temporary appointment with an anticipated term from August 27, 2026, to December 22, 2028, for 0.40 full-time equivalent (FTE). Work shifts include days, evenings, and weekends, with 7.75 hours worked daily totaling approximately 2015 annual hours. The work arrangement is fully onsite.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent Manitoba Standards is required.
  • Graduation from a Medical Laboratory Assistant program is preferred.
  • Certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is desirable.
  • Prior relevant experience is advantageous.

Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with Windows operating systems and preferred knowledge of Microsoft Office suites.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, sterile techniques, and routine practices is preferred.
  • Keyboarding skills between 50 to 55 words per minute are beneficial.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English; bilingual fluency in English and French may be required.
  • Capability to follow detailed oral and written instructions with precision and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment and effectively manage work pressure.

Additional Employment Conditions

  • This term position may end earlier than anticipated as per collective agreement.
  • Employment is conditional on satisfactory completion of a Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check. These checks must be current within six months prior to employment start.
  • Employees cannot hold multiple Shared Health positions exceeding a combined 1.0 FTE.
