Job description

About the Department

Globus is a purpose-led organization focused on helping researchers worldwide discover and work with advanced data management and computing tools. Operating as part of The University of Chicago, it delivers enterprise-grade software-as-a-service to thousands of institutions, including universities, national labs, federal agencies, and commercial research groups. Its core services are free for nonprofit researchers, while advanced capabilities are funded through institutional subscriptions that support stronger control, compliance, and integration with research computing environments. The team includes software engineers, business operations professionals, and Globus Labs, a research group exploring new methods and technologies. Staff are spread across locations globally, reflecting the international research communities they support, and the culture emphasizes collaboration and impact across fields such as life sciences, astronomy, materials science, and public policy.

Role Summary

The organization is hiring a Marketing & Communications Associate to join a growing customer-facing team. This is a broad, hands-on role for someone who enjoys mission-driven work and wants to contribute across newsletters, social media, partner programs, and targeted outreach. You will partner closely with the product marketing manager, events manager, and the wider customer team covering sales, partnerships, user support, and professional services to keep communications coordinated, timely, and effective.

The best fit for this role is someone who likes taking marketing and communications projects from idea to delivery. The team is small, so initiative, energy, and a willingness to learn matter more than seniority. The work involves creative campaigns and ongoing collaboration with researchers and technical stakeholders. Experience in research computing or in bridging conversations between researchers and technologists would be especially valuable.

Success in the position will be reflected by frequent publication and promotion of user success stories, a polished presence at major annual conferences, targeted lead generation campaigns with measurable results, a steady and growing newsletter and social media presence, a well-kept contact database, and being the key coordinator for communications planning across the customer team.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver customer-focused campaigns that increase engagement and help retain existing subscribers.
  • Write and send regular external communications such as newsletters, user notices, and product updates.
  • Coordinate outreach to institutional partners, prospective subscribers, and current user groups, including universities, national labs, and public agencies.
  • Manage social media activity across LinkedIn, X/Twitter, and Mastodon, keeping the brand voice and posting rhythm consistent.
  • Review email and social performance data and prepare recurring reports with practical recommendations.
  • Partner with the events manager to organize Globus participation in conferences, community gatherings, webinars, virtual demos, and user group meetings, including promotion and follow-up messaging.
  • Gather and summarize feedback after events to help shape future event planning.
  • Support targeted lead generation efforts aimed at IT administrators, research computing teams, and research groups at prospective organizations.
  • Create and maintain segmented contact lists and mailing audiences using CRM and email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp.
  • Help develop landing pages, outreach emails, and other campaign materials.
  • Monitor campaign outcomes and contribute to regular customer team reporting.
  • Assist in producing marketing collateral such as conference flyers, slide decks, one-pagers, and promotional items using templates and messaging guidance.
  • Update the website’s marketing pages, news or blog content, and event listings.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors such as designers, print shops, and AV suppliers to ensure materials are produced and delivered on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain inventory of marketing collateral and ensure supplies are replenished as needed.
  • Research and recommend swag and giveaway items for events and exhibitions.
  • Keep organized archives of marketing assets, campaign records, and contact databases.
  • Act as a coordination point for the customer team on communication timing, message consistency, and outreach scheduling.
  • Develop marketing communications, advertising, or publicity materials with moderate guidance, while helping plan and coordinate production so deadlines and budgets are met.
  • Carry out marketing work across communications, digital content, market research, infrastructure updates, or external agency coordination as assigned.
  • Take on other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • A college or university degree in a related area is required.
  • Approximately 2 to 5 years of experience in a related marketing, communications, or outreach role is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adjust tone for different audiences and channels.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and comfort managing several priorities and deadlines at once.
  • Ability to work effectively in a technical environment and build familiarity with Globus products and user communities.
  • Background in a software, technology, university, research computing, scientific, or mission-driven nonprofit setting is preferred.
  • Practical experience with email marketing tools such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, or Constant Contact, along with social media management platforms.
  • Exposure to lead generation processes, including list segmentation and drip campaigns.
  • Some familiarity with AI tools used for content creation.
  • Resume is required as part of the application materials.
  • The role may require occasional evening or weekend work.
  • Work is primarily remote, but occasional in-person meetings are required.
  • Occasional travel to conferences and other events may be necessary.
  • Applicants must upload documents through the My Experience page in the Application Documents section.
  • Employment offers are contingent on a background check that includes conviction history review.
  • A conviction will not automatically bar employment; it is reviewed case by case based on the nature, timing, and relevance of the offense.
  • The university provides reasonable accommodations for applicants who need help completing the process.
  • The organization operates as an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on protected characteristics.
  • AI-assisted tools may be used to streamline parts of recruitment, but hiring decisions are not made by AI.
