Role Purpose

The Maître d’ is pivotal in ensuring the smooth operation of the restaurant’s front-of-house and creating a welcoming environment for visitors. This role involves more than greeting guests; it is about representing the restaurant’s spirit, delivering exceptional customer care, and crafting unforgettable dining moments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the team to provide a friendly and attentive reception for guests from arrival through departure
  • Train and guide Food & Beverage staff to maintain seamless and memorable service standards
  • Assist guests, both internal and external, with dining reservation arrangements
  • Manage cash transactions using the point-of-sale system ensuring accuracy and balanced tills
  • Proactively resolve challenges by transforming potential issues into positive experiences through effective problem-solving and a positive outlook
  • Develop training programs and coordinate on- and off-the-job training for team members
  • Oversee staffing, payroll, cost control, and work towards maximizing profitability
  • Monitor inventory and collaborate with the restaurant manager to conduct stock takes and place orders promptly when necessary
  • Maintain a high standard of personal grooming to uphold a professional appearance

Required Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated success in providing excellent customer service within the hospitality industry
  • Strong knowledge of food and beverage service protocols including table service, beverages, event service, and coffee making skills (highly valued)
  • Flexibility to work in various food & beverage environments and across diverse shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays as needed
  • Current valid RSA certification or equivalent qualification
  • A genuine enthusiasm for engaging with guests and collaborating within a diverse, professional team
