Job description

Role overview

This full-time maintenance role is based at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, and supports the upkeep of buildings, grounds, fixtures, utilities, and related structures. The position combines indoor and outdoor work and may involve driving in varied weather conditions within a controlled traffic environment on a military installation. The job also includes kitchen work at times, where there is a possibility of minor cuts, and exposure to dirt and fumes.

Key duties

  • Carry out light groundskeeping, such as keeping entrances and exits free of debris, clearing sidewalks of ice and snow, and maintaining the area under playground structures in line with safety standards.
  • Perform a range of upkeep tasks for buildings, grounds, fixtures, utilities, and other related facility components.
  • Teach children and youth how to exit the bus safely and conduct monthly bus-evacuation practice sessions using the required procedures; record each drill in writing.
  • Report visible hazards, equipment problems, damaged materials, and any other issue that could affect day-to-day operations to the supervisor.
  • Be prepared to work in multiple environments, including indoors, outdoors, and in a kitchen setting.

Working conditions

The role may require travel or outdoor activity in different weather conditions and can involve exposure to dirt, fumes, and kitchen-related risks such as cuts. Work hours may be irregular and can include evenings and weekends.

Conditions of employment

  • Direct deposit and a Social Security card are required.
  • Candidates must satisfy the job-related qualification, eligibility, and background screening standards.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Employment verification through E-Verify must be completed successfully.
  • Pre-employment checks, including the required background investigation under AR 215-3, para. 2, and a Child Care Tier 1 background investigation, must be passed.
  • A current health assessment and required immunizations, including annual influenza vaccination, must comply with current Army and DoD policy.
  • The schedule may include evenings, weekends, and other irregular hours.
  • This position requires mandatory drug testing and participation in the DA Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program, including signing DA Form 5019-R.
  • The job is designated as a testing designated position (TDP) due to critical safety or security responsibilities, so random drug testing may occur without suspicion of drug use.

Education

A high school diploma or GED is required. Education proof must be submitted with the application, and failure to do so will result in an ineligible rating.
