Job description

About the Company

Gemco Rail, part of Engenco Limited, is a major independent supplier of rollingstock maintenance, products, and services for the rail sectors in Australia and New Zealand. The business works across the manufacture, upkeep, and overhaul of wagons, locomotives, passenger carriages, rollingstock components, and track maintenance equipment to help customers run efficiently and extend the service life of their assets.

Role Overview

Gemco Rail is looking to add several motivated Locomotive Maintainers to the Dynon team. This is a practical, hands-on position focused on inspections, servicing, troubleshooting, and repair work on locomotives so they continue to meet safety, compliance, and operational requirements. The work environment is busy and varied, with faults that can change from day to day, so strong concentration, accuracy, and a disciplined approach are important.

Key Duties

  • Carry out repair work on locomotives and the related equipment.
  • Take part in modification activities, refurbishment tasks, fault diagnosis, testing, and responses to derailments or other incidents.
  • Support improvement efforts aimed at lifting safety and productivity in production work.
  • Prepare and submit all documentation correctly, completely, and within required timeframes.

Reporting Line

The position reports to the Depot Supervisor and works closely with the Dynon team.

About You

To succeed in this role, you should bring a relevant trade background such as Mechanical Fitter and Turner, Boilermaker, Diesel Mechanic, or Electrical Fitter. You must be medically fit and able to perform the physical demands of the job. The role requires flexibility for rostered work, including shifts where needed, and a willingness to work reasonable overtime, including weekends when required. You should have substantial hands-on trade and industry experience, strong communication and people skills, and the ability to work well with colleagues across all levels while delivering great customer service. A self-driven attitude and openness to training and upskilling are important, as is the ability to work as a multi-skilled team member. You must be able to understand and follow Rail Safety and Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and hold a current Australian driver’s licence.

Desirable Experience

Experience in the rail industry, especially with diesel locomotives and rolling stock maintenance and servicing, will be an advantage. Additional licences or tickets such as forklift, crane chaser, or refrigerant handling licences are also desirable.

Benefits

  • Career growth and professional development through learning initiatives such as Learning Academy Scholarships.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including flexibility in hours and days, with hybrid working support for eligible roles.
  • Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for eligible employees.
  • Access to a benefits portal with retail discounts and wellbeing resources.
  • Recognition of employee contributions, achievements, and milestones.
  • Paid volunteer leave and involvement in Diversity & Inclusion and MakeSustainable committees.

Additional Information

Applicants who do not meet every listed requirement are still encouraged to apply, as the company supports growth and development. Successful candidates will need to complete pre-employment checks, including a medical assessment with drug and alcohol testing, provide a valid police clearance, and confirm their right to work in Australia. No recruitment agencies should apply. Gemco Rail is an equal opportunity employer, promotes a diverse and inclusive workplace, and is recognised as a WORK180 endorsed employer for women. The company values integrity, commitment, collaboration, and excellence, and welcomes candidates from all cultures, identities, and experiences.
