This opportunity is arranged as a job-share with a collaborative team of lactation consultants, and it can suit either permanent employment or casual engagement. The clinic runs Monday to Friday with negotiable hours, and the role supports both women and families in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

About the role

In this position, you will deliver advanced lactation support grounded in evidence and aligned with Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) principles. You will work across maternity, neonatal, and medical teams in a private hospital environment to help families meet their feeding goals through compassionate, family-centred care.

Key duties

  • Carry out detailed breastfeeding and lactation assessments, then build tailored feeding plans.
  • Support families facing complex breastfeeding or feeding difficulties.
  • Provide education before and after birth on breastfeeding and infant feeding.
  • Run breastfeeding classes, workshops, and parent support groups.
  • Make sure daily practice follows BFHI requirements and the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps.
  • Take part in BFHI audits, service improvement work, and policy updates.
  • Partner with midwives, nurses, obstetricians, paediatricians, and neonatologists.
  • Keep clinical records accurate, complete, and up to date.

Essential requirements

  • Valid IBCLC certification.
  • Background in maternity, neonatal, or maternal-infant health care.
  • Solid knowledge of BFHI standards.
  • Strong communication skills, along with sound assessment and problem-solving ability.
  • Capacity to work independently in a private hospital setting.

Desirable experience

  • Qualification as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife.
  • Previous work in a BFHI-accredited organisation.
  • Experience delivering education programs for parents.
  • Understanding of how private hospital services operate.

Why this role may suit you

  • You will join a supportive team of lactation consultants working closely together.
  • Flexible, negotiable working hours can be arranged to match your needs.
  • The role offers the chance to make a real difference to family wellbeing.
  • You will be based in a respected BFHI-accredited private hospital.
  • There are opportunities to contribute to professional development and quality improvement.
