Job description
About the role
WSP in Aotearoa New Zealand is seeking a recent graduate to join its Pavements and Materials team at the Petone Research Centre in Lower Hutt as a Laboratory Technician. This position is well suited to someone at the start of their career who wants to apply a science background in a practical laboratory setting. The role supports bitumen testing and broader pavements research work.
What you will do
- Carry out a range of tests on bitumen, asphalt, and other road construction materials.
- Prepare samples, run laboratory equipment, and follow established testing procedures.
- Keep clear, accurate records of test results and observations.
- Assist with routine care, maintenance, and calibration of lab equipment.
- Contribute to improvements in laboratory methods and day-to-day processes.
What we are looking for
This opportunity is aimed at someone early in their career who enjoys structured laboratory work, has an interest in materials and equipment, and is keen to learn how everyday materials perform. A science-related qualification is expected, along with a careful, methodical approach and a commitment to accuracy.
- Qualification in science, such as materials science, chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
- Comfort working in a process-led laboratory where precision matters.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow defined procedures.
- A naturally curious attitude and willingness to learn.
- Current full New Zealand driver’s licence with a clean record.
