Job description

Position Overview

Erie 1 BOCES is looking for a K-12 Art Teacher to work under the direction of the Principal or designated administrator. This permanent teaching position is centered on building an engaging, inclusive studio space that supports artistic growth, critical thinking, and cultural understanding from kindergarten through grade 12.

The right candidate will be able to adapt instruction for young learners, middle school students, and high school students, including portfolio development and art history study. The role also includes curriculum planning, classroom leadership, and promoting the value of visual arts in the school community and beyond.

Teaching and Program Duties

The teacher will create and deliver an art program for all K-12 grade levels that follows state and national standards. Instruction should cover a broad range of media and techniques, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and digital art.

Lessons should connect hands-on creative work with art history, aesthetic understanding, and critical discussion. Instruction must be adjusted to meet different learning needs, including IEPs and 504 plans.

The role also requires maintaining a safe, tidy, and well-organized studio, with proper handling of specialized tools and equipment such as kilns. In addition, the teacher will oversee supplies, inventory, and the department budget, while helping create a classroom culture that encourages experimentation and creative confidence.

Other responsibilities include organizing community art exhibitions, collaborating with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects, and keeping parents and administrators informed about student progress.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related discipline is required, and a master's degree is preferred. Candidates must hold a valid state teaching certification/licensure with K-12 visual arts endorsement.

A strong artistic portfolio, or examples of student work showing strong technical ability and use of multiple media, is also expected. Prior experience through student teaching or in a classroom across elementary, middle, or high school settings is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

The position calls for experience with art studio equipment such as ceramic kilns, pottery wheels, printing presses, and mat cutters. Digital art software knowledge is also important, including tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate, Canva, or 3D modeling applications.

Familiarity with learning management systems like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Seesaw, along with online gradebook systems, is needed. The teacher should also be able to photograph, archive, and edit student artwork for portfolios and school promotion.

Skills and Competencies

Success in this role requires flexibility across age groups, from teaching basic motor skills and shape recognition to leading advanced conceptual art discussions and critiques.

The ideal candidate should be creative in solving classroom and budgeting challenges, patient and encouraging with students of different ability levels, and highly organized when managing multiple projects and rotating classes.

Compensation and Employment Details

The salary range for this position is $36,000 to $42,000 per year. The role is listed as permanent, and the position status may be part time or full time.
