Job description
Role overview
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has an opening for an energetic Band 6 Junior Sister / Charge Nurse to join Toni and Guy Ward, a 15-bed general paediatric unit. The ward supports children with a range of health needs, including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, diabetes, asthma, and also provides shared care for oncology patients.
The successful candidate must be a registered children’s nurse with strong clinical capability, a proactive approach, and a clear commitment to delivering consistently high-quality care to children, their families, and carers. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities are essential, along with strong time management and clinical organisation to help run a busy children’s ward effectively.
What the role involves
This position carries responsibility for maintaining standards and quality in the day-to-day running of the unit. It offers the chance to develop and demonstrate leadership and people-management skills within a clinical setting. A key part of the post is regularly taking charge of the ward and supporting junior colleagues through mentorship and role modelling.
- Deliver expert, holistic care of a consistently high standard to patients and their relatives within King’s College Hospital.
- Accept direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area when the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse / Head of Department is unavailable or when duties are delegated.
- Support the guidance and development of an identified group of nurses within the ward team.
- Serve as a clinical point of reference both within the ward and across the wider Care Group as needed.
- Act as a positive example for junior staff, with a strong focus on courteous, patient-centred service and strict confidentiality at all times.
Values and working culture
The trust operates across five sites and delivers a broad mix of local and specialist services. Its strategy, Strong Roots, Global Reach, is centred on being bold, brilliant in its people, outstanding in care, and a leader in research, innovation, and education, with diversity, equality, and inclusion at the core. The organisation is committed to person-centred care, digital enablement, and sustainability, and seeks people who are ready to contribute meaningfully to patients and colleagues.
Sustainability commitment
King’s College Hospital is committed to Sustainable Healthcare for All through its Green Plan. In line with national Greener NHS goals, the trust aims to reach net zero carbon by 2040 for its NHS Carbon Footprint and by 2045 for its NHS Carbon Footprint Plus. All staff are expected to play their part by working responsibly and reducing carbon, waste, and pollution wherever possible.
