Job description

About Gusto

Gusto is focused on helping small businesses thrive by taking care of complex people operations such as payroll, health insurance, retirement plans, and HR. The company serves more than 500,000 small businesses across the United States and aims to build a workplace that reflects the customers it supports.

Full-time team members receive competitive base compensation, benefits, and equity in the form of RSUs. Offer details depend on the role, seniority, and location. Gusto also expects employees to build familiarity with AI tools that are relevant to their work and to keep developing those skills as technology changes.

About the Role

In this position, you will guide small business customers through Gusto’s selection and onboarding journey. You will speak with prospects who come in through the website by phone, email, and chat, using a consultative sales approach to match the platform to their needs and help them move smoothly through onboarding.

The broader sales organization is large, collaborative, and focused on solution-based selling. The team supports small businesses across multiple channels and values doing sales in the right way, with shared goals and a strong team culture.

What You Will Do

  • Manage a high volume of inbound conversations with small business owners across phone, email, and chat during discovery, decision-making, and onboarding.
  • Use each interaction to keep customers progressing, including key onboarding steps and their first payroll run.
  • Identify opportunities to increase revenue by recommending plan upgrades and cross-selling Health Insurance, Workers' Comp, and 401(k).
  • Develop consultative and advisory selling skills tailored to the needs of small businesses.
  • Build strong product knowledge and deepen customer understanding over time.
  • Take part in career growth and community-oriented programs within Gusto.
  • Use AI-driven workflows as part of your daily sales process, including assigned tools, spotting inefficiencies, and sharing feedback to help improve products and processes.

What We Are Looking For

  • At least 1 year of experience in a fast-paced sales or customer service environment with responsibility for cross-selling, upselling, or meeting quotas/KPIs.
  • A genuine customer-first mindset grounded in empathy and ethical business practices.
  • Strong motivation to achieve goals and keep improving performance.
  • Excellent communication skills across phone, email, and chat.
  • Comfort with change and the ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.
  • Hands-on experience using AI in everyday work, including writing, research, preparation, and summarization, along with the ability to provide useful feedback that helps improve tools and workflows.

Compensation and Work Arrangement

The hourly pay range for this role is $23.00 to $24.50 in Denver, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Phoenix. Final compensation is influenced by several factors, including experience and expertise, and may differ from the range listed.

Gusto operates physical offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Team members based in those locations are generally expected to work onsite on designated days about 2 to 3 days per week, with more time in the office depending on the role. The same expectations apply to Symmetry roles in Scottsdale. For employees approved to work outside a Gusto office, a secure, dependable, and stable internet connection is required, including on non-office days for hybrid employees.

Equal Opportunity and Privacy

Gusto is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Hiring decisions are not based on protected characteristics such as race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other legally protected statuses. The company also considers qualified applicants with criminal histories in line with applicable law and provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans during the application process. If a medical or religious accommodation is needed during the candidate journey, applicants can request one and the team will respond.

Applicants should also note that Gusto takes personal information protection seriously. Fraud-related guidance and the Applicant Privacy Notice apply to the application process.
