Role overview

Lookout Housing and Health Society supports adults with little or no income who often have very limited housing or support options. The organization aims to keep access barriers low and provides housing along with a range of support services. This position is for a Janitor/Maintenance Worker at Canada's Best Value Inn in Langley, British Columbia.

Work schedule and conditions

This is a full-time permanent role. Work is scheduled from Monday to Friday, with shifts running from 10:00 to 18:00. Each shift is 7.5 hours long. Days off are consecutive, and the schedule may change with two weeks' notice. The probationary/qualifying period is 488 hours, with midpoint and end-point reviews.

Compensation

The hourly wage is $25.18 to $26.84, depending on the applicant's seniority under the Collective Agreement.

Main purpose of the role

The Janitor Maintenance Worker reports to the Site Manager and is expected to carry out duties in line with the mission, philosophy, and Code of Ethics of Lookout Housing and Health Society. The position is responsible for keeping the entire property clean and orderly, both indoors and outdoors, while also helping ensure that mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems remain in good working condition. Regular maintenance and janitorial support across the site are part of the job.

Key duties

  • Carry out cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Collect garbage and manage recycling containers.
  • Check, monitor, and maintain building equipment.
  • Perform repairs and upkeep across the premises, including suites, plumbing-related work, and landscaping tasks.
  • Support the onboarding of new staff, supervise volunteers, and coordinate with team members to help meet guest needs.
  • Complete work mainly indoors, with some outdoor duties as required.
  • Be aware that the role may involve some unpleasant conditions.
  • Stay attentive and alert throughout the shift; sleeping while on duty is not allowed.
  • Follow the health and safety program and contribute to its ongoing implementation.

Qualifications and competencies

Applicants should have at least a Grade 12 education plus two years of recent, relevant experience, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience. A Building Service Worker Diploma would be considered an asset. The successful candidate must also hold a current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate. Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an added advantage.

The role requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, handle stress effectively, and keep workloads organized. Strong communication, writing, record-keeping, and organizational abilities are important, along with a clear understanding of professional boundaries. Candidates must be able to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse setting and have the physical and mental capability to perform the work and operate job-related equipment. If there are any concerns related to alcohol or drug use, a minimum of two years of sobriety is required. A Criminal Record Clearance for the Vulnerable Sector is also required.
