Position Overview

The Ironworker Helper 1 supports skilled tradespeople by carrying out auxiliary duties under direct supervision. The job's responsibilities and expectations adjust based on the individual's experience level and assigned role.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acquire skills to interpret specifications or blueprints to identify the positioning, quantity, and size of materials needed.
  • Assist expert craftsmen in fabricating metal components such as steel frames, columns, beams, or girders, following blueprints or supervisor instructions.
  • Help unload and position prefabricated steel sections for hoisting, and operate cranes or signal operators for lifting and placing structural steel parts.
  • Learn to check vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel using tools such as plumb bobs, lasers, transits, or levels.
  • Utilize metal cutting, bending, or welding equipment including shears, torches, or welding tools to handle steel pieces.
  • Set up hoisting gear or rigging equipment like cables, pulleys, or hooks to move heavy materials or machinery.

Candidate Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent possibly required, alongside previous experience in this or related fields.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to this role.
  • Capacity to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with supervision and management.
  • Experience working in the selected trade discipline.
  • Familiarity with the safe and proficient use of hand, power, and layout tools.

Job Requirements and Conditions

  • Continuous physical activity on construction or industrial sites involving standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Exposure to variable outdoor weather conditions in a construction setting is constant.
  • Willingness and availability to work irregular hours including weekends, overtime, and holidays as necessary.
  • Ability to use ladders, mechanical platforms, manlifts, and scaffolding at heights potentially exceeding 200 feet, requiring balance and climbing skills.
  • Work in confined, cluttered environments and uneven terrain.
  • Comfort working in noisy and dusty conditions.
  • Capable of carrying items up to 50 pounds across the site.
  • Possession of necessary tools for the job.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license may be required.
  • Compliance with all safety procedures and project regulations is mandatory. Additional duties as assigned.
  • Must pass pre-access drug and alcohol screenings and meet fitness for duty medical requirements.
