Job description

Company Overview

Meridian Energy is New Zealand’s largest generator of renewable electricity. Its power comes from wind, water and solar, and the company also serves more than 400,000 homes, businesses, and farms through Meridian and Powershop. The organisation is guided by a strong sense of purpose and a collaborative, people-focused culture.

About the Role

Meridian is seeking an Internal Communications Manager to join its Wellington office. The role sits within a close-knit communications team and reports to the Head of Communications. You will lead the development and delivery of Meridian’s internal communications approach and manage one direct report. Prior people management experience is helpful but not required.

What You’ll Do

  • Define and drive the organisation’s internal communications approach so employees stay connected to the company’s direction, priorities, and impact.
  • Create compelling people-focused content that highlights stories, work, and achievements across the business in a genuine and engaging way.
  • Work with senior leaders to support major announcements and ensure messaging for executives, teams, and projects is clear and effective.
  • Use data, feedback, and insights to strengthen communication quality, improve engagement, and refine priorities over time.
  • Help maintain alignment between internal and external messaging by collaborating closely with the wider corporate communications team.

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience building and delivering an organisation-wide internal communications strategy aligned to business goals and employee needs.
  • Confidence working in a corporate communications environment, with flexibility to support some external content such as website updates and editing across internal and external channels.
  • Hands-on knowledge of internal communications tools and systems, ideally including Microsoft Engage.
  • Experience partnering with senior leaders and executives on complex, sensitive, or high-profile messaging.
  • The ability to turn complicated information into clear, engaging, and accessible stories across multiple formats.
  • A strong interest in using channels, metrics, and audience feedback to improve reach and engagement.
  • Experience using AI in communications, plus the ability to film and edit video content, or a willingness to build those skills.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary package reviewed each year, along with access to partner discounts.
  • Southern Cross Healthcare Wellbeing One insurance for eligible employees.
  • Enhanced leave benefits, including three company-paid days over the holiday period, enhanced parental leave, and the option to purchase up to 12 additional days of leave.
  • Life, trauma, and income protection insurance.
  • Improved KiwiSaver contributions.
  • Strong learning and development support to help you grow professionally.
  • An award-winning wellbeing programme.
  • Discounted electricity through Meridian.

Why Join Meridian

Meridian offers meaningful work, supportive teams, and opportunities for career growth. The company is guided by three values: be gutsy, be in the waka, and be a good human.
