Job description

Position Summary

This is a nine-month faculty role focused on delivering high-quality English instruction in a fair and inclusive learning environment.

Key Duties

  • Teach English courses in person, online, hybrid, or web-enhanced formats as assigned.
  • Base the role at the White Bridge Road campus, with primary teaching responsibilities at the White Bridge and North Davidson campuses; assignments may also be given at other campuses or sites where instruction is offered.
  • Work a minimum of 37.5 hours per week, with at least 15 teaching hours, plus in-person and virtual office hours as required by college policy.
  • Coordinate with Course Leads, the Department Chair, and the Dean to support a consistent and equitable student experience.
  • Use the college learning management system to keep course materials current and accurate.
  • Prepare and submit syllabi before the first day of class.
  • Monitor college email and the departmental mailbox regularly, and reply within 24 hours except on weekends.
  • Complete attendance, Early Alerts, progress reports, grade submissions, questionnaires, and student outcome assessments by the required deadlines.
  • Submit final grades each semester by the registrar’s deadline.
  • Provide academic advising with a focus on student retention and success.
  • Stay current in the discipline through ongoing professional development.
  • Take part in departmental, school-wide, and college-wide committee work.
  • Help build and sustain relationships inside and outside the institution.
  • Support departmental institutional effectiveness efforts.
  • Follow all college and Tennessee Board of Regents policies and guidelines.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by the Academic Dean.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in English, English Composition, Writing, or Literature; or
  • A master’s degree in another field plus at least 18 graduate semester hours in English, English Composition, Writing, or Literature; or
  • An MFA in Creative Writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior college-level teaching experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity and access.
  • Understanding of the community college mission and the needs of its students.
  • Experience teaching developmental courses, along with graduate coursework in developmental education.
  • Experience teaching Composition I and II, developmental writing, and developmental reading.
  • Experience teaching English in multiple formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, live virtual, and asynchronous online delivery.
  • Ability to integrate current technologies into teaching.
  • A terminal degree in English, Composition, or Creative Writing.

Skills and Competencies

The role calls for strong English instruction, adaptable delivery across multiple learning formats, clear communication, collaborative teamwork, academic advising, course administration, and comfort with instructional technology.

Compensation

The pay range is $39,097 to $48,871, depending on experience.
