Job description

Overview

This role involves the comprehensive cleaning and maintenance of state facilities, including public buildings, lodges, or institutions, as well as potentially supervising other custodial staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, washing, vacuuming, waxing, and polishing of floors, walls, woodwork, windows, furniture, and equipment.
  • Sanitize laboratories, restrooms, and bedrooms while ensuring necessary supplies like paper, towels, and soap are replenished.
  • Collect and properly dispose of trash and garbage; move furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Conduct sanitary inspections to maintain infection control standards in designated areas.
  • Handle replacement and removal of medically contaminated sharps and soiled dressings safely.
  • Manage ordering and distribution of custodial supplies and maintain inventory records.
  • Identify and report safety violations and participate in emergency response activities.
  • Provide training and ongoing education to junior custodial workers.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise housekeeping department tasks; inspect quarters to ensure adherence to housekeeping standards.
  • Maintain distribution records for furnishings and prepare required reports and budget requests.
  • Assist in establishing departmental housekeeping policies and standards.

Required Experience and Education

Applicants should have at least six months of experience in custodial work within buildings or institutional settings, or possess an equivalent mix of education and experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with a variety of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial operations.
  • Understanding of proper waste disposal procedures, including handling hazardous materials like medically contaminated sharps and dressings.
  • Knowledge of chemical safety related to cleaning products.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Skill in operating custodial machinery and tools.

Additional Requirements

Applicants under the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services will be required to pass a physical exam demonstrating capability to occasionally lift 40 pounds and exert a maximum push/pull force of 25 pounds. Certain positions may be designated as safety sensitive according to Oklahoma statutes.
