What the role involves
- Keeping the care home environment clean, orderly, and to a consistently high standard.
- Supporting the smooth running of housekeeping and laundry activities in coordination with the Housekeeping & Laundry Manager and Director of Nursing.
- Handling laundry processes for residents, including sorting, washing, drying, ironing, folding, labelling, and returning clothing and linens appropriately.
- Working with the multidisciplinary team and contributing to daily operations, meetings, audits, and service reviews.
- Following infection prevention measures and safeguarding resident safety at all times.
Requirements
- Prior experience in a similar setting is helpful but not required, as training will be provided.
- Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively within a team.
- Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills for regular interaction with residents, colleagues, and visitors.
- Commitment to maintaining a very high standard of cleanliness and care when working around residents.
- Good spoken and written English.
Key responsibilities
- Track stock levels for equipment and consumables used by the department.
- Maintain checklists and work closely with management to support efficient day-to-day housekeeping and laundry operations.
- Ensure resident rooms are kept clean, tidy, and well presented.
- Carry out all duties with resident safety as a priority.
- Follow infection control guidance at all times.
- Communicate and cooperate with the multidisciplinary care team.
- Report incidents promptly to the Housekeeping & Laundry Manager or Director of Nursing.
- Be courteous, professional, and approachable with residents, visitors, and staff.
- Coordinate with management regarding new admissions and make sure residents’ clothing is properly labelled.
- Support monitoring, auditing, and evaluation activities as needed.
- Take part in staff, resident, and departmental meetings when scheduled by the Director of Nursing.
- Collect laundry regularly from resident areas and transfer it to the laundry department in line with infection control procedures.
- Sort laundry by type and colour, and wash items at the correct temperature.
- Wash residents’ clothing according to the labelled temperature, then iron and fold items before return.
- Ensure bedding is ironed and towels and face cloths are folded and stored neatly in the correct place.
- Make sure clothing is accurately identified and labelled to minimise the risk of loss.
- Return residents’ clothing to the correct resident and ensure items are neatly put away.
- Keep wardrobes and drawers tidy.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the laundry room.
- Carry out daily cleaning of washers, dryers, laundry bags, lint trays, vents, and floors.
