Hostel Support Worker - 36 Hours

Overview

The Leonard Stocks Centre serves as Torbay's homeless hostel in Torquay, providing accommodation to 28 men and women who have faced street homelessness. We are seeking a dedicated Support Worker to join our team in this dynamic, resident-focused environment.

Role Responsibilities

Your main function will be to guide and assist residents within the hostel, helping empower them to make meaningful life changes and supporting their transitions to more independent living situations. In this role, you will collaborate with the Growth in Action Alliance throughout Torbay to ensure residents effectively engage with additional support services.

Work Schedule

Shifts are organized on a rota basis, alternating between 07:45 - 20:15 and 19:45 - 08:15. Given the nature of the service, staffing is continuous throughout the year, 365 days annually.

Screening and Checks

This position involves regulated activities and requires an Enhanced Criminal Record Check alongside a Barred List Check to review spent and unspent convictions, adult cautions, local police information, and barred list records.

Compensation

The annual salary ranges from A328,598 to A331,022.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

• Clear, sensitive, and purposeful communication, especially in emotional or sensitive contexts.
• Proactive and responsible approach to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
• Ability to build positive relationships with partner organizations, advocating confidently for clients.
• Fluency in spoken English to provide accurate advice in accordance with the Immigration Act 2016 requirements.
• Comprehensive understanding of the benefits system, including housing benefits.
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding practices and protection against abuse.
• Thorough familiarity with issues related to substance misuse and/or mental health.

Experience and Qualifications

• Experience working with individuals who have support needs.
• Previous exposure to supporting people facing mental health and/or substance misuse challenges.
• Good general education, including GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
