Job description

Position Overview

The role of the permanent substitute teacher involves supporting regular teachers who are unavailable due to professional development or other commitments, as well as covering for staff absences. This is a full-time, on-campus position under a one-year contract. Participation during non-student contact days is required for professional development or project work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom coverage for absent teachers and support them during planned absences by collaborating on lesson plans and ensuring feedback is given on instruction outcomes.
  • Remain flexible to assist with other duties and assignments beyond classroom teaching as needed.
  • Supervise and manage student activities when not engaged in teaching.
  • Encourage a positive student environment by fostering belonging, joy, and meaningful engagement throughout the High School.
  • Address diverse student needs using evidence-based strategies and Tier I instructional practices to cater for varied learning styles and language backgrounds.
  • Engage actively in ongoing professional development through observation, feedback, and reflection with learning coaches and school leadership.
  • Use flexible learning spaces and groupings creatively to match student ability levels and backgrounds.
  • Incorporate technology innovatively in daily teaching.
  • Commit to continuous personal and professional growth while embodying the school's core values in all interactions.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is mandatory; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Possession of a teaching license or an educational degree is necessary.
  • Preferably at least two years of full-time classroom teaching experience.
  • Familiarity with standards-based curriculum development and experience working within collaborative learning communities is advantageous.
  • Exposure to flexible learning spaces and application of the Science of Reading literacy instruction methods are preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
  • Proficient use of technology for instructional and administrative purposes.
  • Effective classroom management capabilities.
