Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fundamental research on small and mid-cap healthcare companies, including analyzing financial statements, valuations, and competitive landscapes.
  • Assist in creating and updating financial and valuation models to support investment theses.
  • Engage in primary research by attending management meetings, industry conferences, consulting experts, and interacting with sell-side analysts.
  • Contribute to internal reports, company summaries, and investment memoranda.
  • Support senior analysts and portfolio managers in generating long and short investment ideas consistent with Alger’s philosophy.
  • Monitor portfolio holdings, tracking earnings, news flow, and material updates.
  • Keep abreast of healthcare sector trends, regulatory changes, innovation pipelines, and reimbursement issues, sharing insights with the team.
  • Prepare materials for portfolio manager discussions and investment reviews.
  • Utilize internal quantitative tools and screening reports to identify investment prospects.
  • Maintain proprietary databases related to company fundamentals, product pipelines, and industry metrics.
  • Collaborate closely with healthcare analysts and the wider investment team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assume increasing responsibility for sector coverage under senior mentorship.
  • Contribute to fostering a culture of intellectual rigor, continuous learning, and meticulousness.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, science, or a related discipline.
  • MBA and/or CFA designation preferred but not mandatory.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • At least 3 to 4 years of buy-side experience required.
  • Prior exposure to the healthcare sector strongly favored.
  • Basic understanding of healthcare business models, including regulatory frameworks, reimbursement mechanisms, and innovation drivers.
  • Expertise in fundamental research, financial statement analysis, valuation, and modeling.
  • Ability to cover multiple healthcare subsectors effectively as a generalist.
  • Comfort with evaluating companies considering regulatory, reimbursement, and scientific aspects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for articulating investment ideas clearly.
  • High motivation, intellectual curiosity, and disciplined work habits.
  • Strong organizational capabilities to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Team-oriented mindset with confidence in presenting independent viewpoints and constructively challenging assumptions.
